Jai Maa Chinnamasta! Jai Jai Jai Maa! Today and tonight I bow before the Divine Mother in her aspect as Maa Chinnamasta, Goddess of Awakening Wisdom, and I pray The Great Invocation:

The Great Invocation

From the point of Light within the Mind of God
Let light stream forth into the minds of men.
Let Light descend on Earth.

From the point of Love within the Heart of God
Let love stream forth into the hearts of men.
May Christ return to Earth.

From the centre where the Will of God is known
Let purpose guide the little wills of men–
The purpose which the Masters know and serve.

From the centre which we call the race of men
Let the Plan of Love and Light work out
And may it seal the door where evil dwells.

Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth.

Who is this Goddess Chinnamasta and why would I pray to Her to restore the plan on Earth? Well, quite simply, She is the Pure Absolute Wisdom which transcends the illusion of Maya. She is the pure light that descends from on high. As such, She is also the embodiment of a fierce immensity: “Her left foot forward in battle, she holds her severed head and a knife. Naked, she drinks voluptuously the stream of the blood nectar flowing from her beheaded body. The jewel on her forehead is tied with a serpent. She has three eyes. Her breasts are adorned with lotuses. Inclined towards lust, she sits erect above the god of love, who shows signs of lustfulness. She looks like the red China rose.” Chinnamasta Tantra

Chinnamasta1800Parvati became known as Chinnamasta, the Self-Decapitated Goddess who represents the transcendence of material identification and the sacrifice of ego as wisdom transcends the lower nature in the awakening of kundalini Shakti. Chinnamasta’s name is also seen as Chhinnamasta and Chinnamastaka, and in Tantric Buddhism she is known as Chinnamunda. She explodes like thunder and lightning as Her kundalini pierces into pure consciousness. Day Five Navaratri, April 2016: Bhairavi, The Power of Death

Mahapadmavanantasthe Paramanandavigrahe, Shabdabrahmamaye Svacche Vande Tripurabhairaveem…Mahapadmavanantasthe Paramanandavigrahe, Shabdabrahmamaye Svacche Vande Tripurabhairaveem… Mahapadmavanantasthe Paramanandavigrahe, Shabdabrahmamaye Svacche Vande Tripurabhairaveem

Bhairavi yantra“Softly smiling, you shine with a crimson glow that may be compared to a thousand newly risen suns. You wear a silver veil and a garland of skulls. Blood smears your breast. Three voluptuous eyes adorn your lotus face; the Moon is your diadem. Your lotus hands show the gestures of victory, wisdom, the granting of boons and the allaying of fear.” (Tripura-Bhairavi Tantra)

Bhairavi or Tripura-Bhairavi, like Kali-Durga, is a warrior goddess. She represents the transformational kundalini fire. The name Bhairavi is derived from Bharana (to create); Ramana (to protect); and Vamana (to eject). Just as Bhuvaneshwari protects life, Bhairavi transforms it.  She is often associated with the Mahapralaya, the great dissolution at the end of the world, and her name is also a title for a female adept in Kundalini Tantra. In Vedic astrology, Bhairavi is propitiated to strengthen and heal issues related to the lagna (ascendant or rising sign) of the horoscope, which refers to all matters for an individual, whether body, mind or soul.

mahavidya_bhairavi_hk53Water Color Painting on Paper by Kailash Raj(Mahavidya Bhairavi Water Color Painting on Paper by Kailash Raj)

Bhairavi is the shakti of the awareness of death and beyond death. Her name means “awe-inspiring,” and refers to one who has transcended death, which is a tremendous state of awakening. The Dalai Lama has said, “Awareness of death is the very bedrock of the path. Until you have developed this awareness, all other practices are obstructed.” In Rebirthing (Sacred Breath) practice, which I do personally and as a practitioner, we often talk about clearing the “death urge” which is the sense of identification with a separate limited ego. For some lucky ones, who are blessed and guided by a truly awakened guru (of which there are few), this can involve a great initiation called diksha-mrytu which is an initiatory death experience that clears this death urge. After this is given, one lives in a state of transcendence, free from the suffering of the temporal world.

I bow to the liberating power of consciousness
Who bestows enlightenment as she rises
Through the subtle bodies of purified souls,
You are the queen of the life force.
You radiate bliss.
You who travel the subtle path, please bless me.
With deep reverence, I bow to Mother Kundalini.
Please lift my limited awareness
From the empty hovel of my egotism
To the thousand-chambered mansion
Of divine consciousness.

Day Four Navaratri, April 2016: Bhuvaneshwari, Lady of the Spheres

Om Hreem Shreem Kleem Bhuvaneshwaryei Namah…Om Hreem Shreem Kleem Bhuvaneshwaryei Namah…Om Hreem Shreem Kleem Bhuvaneshwaryei Namah

bhuvaneshvari yantra“With the Moon as her diadem, with large breasts and three eyes, smiling, She shines like the risen Sun. Her hands grant boons, allay fears, and hold an elephant hook and a noose. I bow to the fear-inspiring Lady of the Spheres.” (Bhuvaneshwari Tantra)

cosmic_goddess_bhuvaneshvari_the_creator_of_the_os36Bhuvaneshwari, Lady of the Spheres, the Power of Knowledge, Queen of Queens, Goddess as World Mother, consort of the three-eyed Shiva Tryambaka, who is the reflection of Divine Wisdom, whose body is the whole cosmos, I bow before You on this fourth day of Chaitra Navaratri and ask for Your prayers and blessings for all sentient beings and for Gaia, our beautiful planet Herself, for peace, well-being, harmony, and compassion to reign again in this realm.

Goddess Bhuvaneshwari — Bhuh (earth), bhuvah (atmosphere) and svah (heavens) — is a prototype of Mother Earth, Prithvi, according to the sacred hymns of the Rig Veda. She is the Vedic Aditi, infinite and indivisible Divine Cosmic Mother. She is akash, the source river from which all other rivers flow, the eternal matrix that creates everything.bhuvaneshwari(Bhuvaneshwari print by Pieter Weltevrede from Sanatan Society)

Aditi is Mother of the Sun and all solar deities (adityas). The Sri Lalitha Sahasranama describes Bhuvaneshwari as the protector of the 14 worlds (bhuvana). She is also known as Siddha-ratri, the Night of Realization, which is like a veil of knowledge that surrounds the whole universe. Bhuvana also means water, so She is considered as the protector of not only the land but all waters. She is also considered as the Mother of Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Gayatri, and according to astrology, She is invoked and worshiped to propitiate the Moon.

Sally Kempton in Awakening Shakti writes about this aspect of the Divine Mother:

“Bhuvaneshwari is the Goddess whose body is the space of infinite possibility. She is ananda—infinite, creative wisdom/love. She’s the matrix, the eternal mother energy who spins the universe out of her own body the way a spider spins a web—and then lives in it…Bhuvaneshwari is a wonderful goddess to access in meditation, guaranteeing you that even in the most formless state of awareness, you’ll feel a subtle, motherly embrace. When you invoke her presence in meditation, she can gather you into a space that feels like a vast, spacious, cosmic womb. Bhuvaneshwari’s subtle meditation presence is formless, detached, an oceanic awareness that you can float in. It will hold you, support you, and renew you. When I want to practice letting go of anxiety or fear, it’s often Bhuvaneshwari whom I invoke. Her spaciousness seems to swallow whole whatever needs to be cleared. You can offer her whatever you’re holding onto: guilt, loss, emotional upheaval, or just an excess of thoughts. She will take it in, dissolve it, and offer it back transformed. She is the cosmic womb, the great expanse within which all things are held, and out of which they are born.”

In simplest terms, to access Maa Bhuvaneshwari, just expand, and let go into Her bliss. Jai Maa!

Day Three Navaratri, April 2016: Lalita Devi, Mother of Eternal Bliss

Homage to the Absolute Reality, the source and the embodiment of bliss, the supreme consciousness, here termed as She, the Mother, who is both the magnificent image of the universe and the mirror in which this dazzling reflection appears. (from Tripura Rahasya II, I, 1)

Tripura-sundari_yantra_colorDay Three of Das Mahavidya Navaratri sadhana is devoted to Shri Lalita Devi, known also as Tripura Sundari, Shodashi (Vermillion Hued), and Sri Vidya, Goddess of Wisdom). Lalita means “She who Plays,” and She is thus called “Maha Maya,” as She plays with us and through us in Her lila or divine play.

Tripura means the “Three Cities” of Heaven, Earth and the Netherworld. “Sundari” means “Beautiful Woman,” so Her name means “Beautiful Goddess of the Three Cities.” She is the Supreme Goddess who embodies and transcends the holy trinity and five-fold aspect of the Divinity. According to Vedic astrology, Lalita Devi is related to Mercury (Budha) in the horoscope; we can propitiate Her to strengthen or balance Mercury in the horoscope.

Just as Lalita is the absolute universal power, Mercury’s essence is also to contain and unify. This idea is represented by Mercury’s symbol in the Caduceus (Staff of Hermes), an alchemical emblem of two serpents wrapped around a center rod, representing the union of opposites in the human energetic system when it transcends the illusory world of duality. Mercury is also tri-doshic in Ayurveda, and Mercury is the graha that relates to play which is Lalita’s essence as Maha Maya.

caduceusThe whole universe is always encompassed by light within and without. Such light is transcendental and is called the supreme Tripura, the supreme goddess. Knowers of the Vedas call her Brahman and Vaisnaivites call her Vishnu. According to Saivites, she is Siva; according to Shaktas, she is Shakti.

Lalita Tripura Sundari seated over Brahma Vishnu Shiva Maheswara and SadashivaAs the image is pervaded by the mirror, this world is pervaded by the power of consciousness. All the objects in this universe are illuminated by that light. As the image of a city is not part of the mirror, similarly the universe is not part of consciousness. As an image cannot be separated from the mirror, the universe cannot be separated from consciousness. This is the glory if the real self.

Tripura Sundari says, “Sages, listen to me…This whole universe, like an image in the mirror, is born, it is there, and it annihilates itself. That which is seen by the ignorant as the world is realized by the yogis as pure knowledge. I am called Tripura. Far beyond the world there is an ocean of eternal bliss. In the center of that ocean there is an island of gems, and the midst of that island there is a temple with brilliant illumination. In the inner chamber of that temple is a throne on which is seated Mahatripurasundari, the great Mother Divine, with her five aspects. O highest of seers, that is myself.

By my own primal Shakti, it seems that I am born and will die in the world. In this way my faces are multifarious. I am beyond and above all, Sri Vidya. That which is pure, beyond all the phenomenal world, is the knowledge of the absolute, and to contemplate on that is freedom from duality. When the mind and its modifications flow towards the eternal center, atman, O seers, pure atman is realized. Therefore those practitioners who identify pure consciousness, through which all objects are illumined, alone remove all impurities. Those purified ones remain absorbed in that realization.”

(The above is extracted from Tripura Rahasya: The Mystery Behind the Trinity, translated by Swami Sri Ramanananda Saraswathi (Munagala S. Venkataramaiah).

One of my favorite chants to the Devi is 108 Sacred Names of Mother Divine: Sacred Chants of Devi by Craig Pruess and Ananda which you can preview and download here (#2 “Devi Prayer”): Maa Amba Lalitha Devi~Parashakti Sundari~Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah

Day Two, Navaratri April 2016: Goddess Tara

Om Hrim Strim Hum Phat…Om Hrim Strim Hum Phat…Om Hrim Strim Hum Phat

tara yantra v1The Goddess is the source of all, the universal creator. “The gods, approaching the resplendent Goddess, asked her, “Who are you?”

The Goddess replied, “I am the form of Immensity; from me the world arises as Nature and Person, or Prakriti and Purusa. (Devi Upanisad 1-2).

The second night of Das Mahavidya Navaratri sadhana is devoted to the Goddess Tara, whose name means “Star.”  She is a manifestation of Kali who is worshipped in the Tantric tradition through an image somewhat but not exactly similar to Kali. The famous 18th-century Bengali saint and Shakta poet Ramprasad Sen often wrote about Kali and Tara interchangeably. Kamalakanta who followed in Ramprasad’s footsteps did the same, as the Divine Mother assumes various forms by which to fulfill the wishes of Her children.

the_mahavidya_tara_ht85Tara represents the early dawn when there is hunger and desire for sustenance in the creative process of life. Known as “She Who Brings Through Life,” Tara is often propitiated to help us fulfill our creative ambitions in life. She is also depicted in various ways in Vedic, Tantra, Buddhist or Jain traditions. In the Tantras, Tara is described as the “Great Void” and “Changeless Face of the Immensity.” Her consort is the Never Decaying aspect of Shiva (Akshobhya Shiva). Thus, Tara is the Never Decaying aspect of the Divinity Herself.

Tara is said to laugh loudly as she drinks blood which symbolizes the creative juices of life. In Her compassionate form of Gauri, She also drinks the poison of the world; thus, her power is not only creative but also healing and transformative. In Buddhism, She is worshiped in 21 different forms and is the ultimate embodiment of compassion.

In Puranic legend, Tara is married to the Priest of the Devas named Brihaspati (Jupiter), who is the Lord of Wisdom. Many Vedic astrologers recommend Tara sadhana for improving the karmas of Jupiter in the astrological chart. Tara is also the power of knowledge and speech. One of the best ways to connect with Tara and propitiate Jupiter is through nada/shabdha yoga/the yoga of the inner sound current/inner listening and chanting AUM, because Tara is like a bridge between unmanifest and manifest sound.

Day One Navaratri April 2016: Jai Kali Maa

Kali Kali Mahakali ~ Kalike Papanasini
Khadgahaste Mundahaste ~
Kali Kali Namostute

Kali_Yantra William ClarkKali Yantra by William Clark

Jai Maa and Happy Day/Night One of Navaratri. This year I am propitiating the Devi in a different order than usual, invoking the Dasa Mahavidya instead of the nine forms of Durga used in an alternate scheme, as the One Truth is expressed in many different personalities.

This night is devoted to the goddess Kali Maa, one of the fiercest of deities, who conquers death, darkness, and time. Her name in Sanskrit comes from the word “kala,” which means time, death, darkness, or lord of death. I always find it interesting that in Hawaiian language, “kala” is associated with true freedom, trans. as “to loosen, untie, release, remove, unburden, absolve, let go, acquit, take off, and undo.”

This Hawaiian meaning of Kala synchronistically expresses the essence of Kali Maa as well, as She frees us from the unreal world of Maya. Interestingly, kala also means black in Sanskrit, whereas in Hawaiian it can also mean “sunshine.” I think her name clearly shows that She takes us from the illusionary external world of darkness into the brightest truest light within.

Wearing a garland of 52 skulls and a skirt of dismembered arms, she slays the ignorant ego that is identified with the temporal reality, which is separated from the true knowledge of Self and Oneness. Kali is often depicted with one foot on Lord Shiva lying like a corpse, which signifies the union of Purusha—Shiva, the absolute unmanifest, and Prakriti—Shakti, the creative power of manifestation. Allegorically, Shiva is the riverbed, while his Shakti flows through as the river.

275px-KaligoddessKali is associated with Lord Shani (Saturn) in Vedic astrology. She is worshiped to protect us from Saturn problems, including fear and worry; health and relationship issues; and material concerns. But one must never undertake Kali sadhana lightly (believe me, I know this firsthand). Kali Maa teaches us about the root chakra, the muladhara, which correlates with Saturn and unresolved issues related to our familial roots or societal conditioning as well as safety and security concerns. As the awareness of our deepest strength and inner knowing, Kali can help us when faced with uncertainty, at those times when we have no other choice but to “let go and let Goddess” run the show for us. Jai Maa Kali Maa!

Dive deep, O mind
Into the heart’s fathomless depths,
Where many a gem lies hid.
Dive deep and make your way
To Mother Kali’s realm. (Ramprasad Sen)

Happy Chaitra Navaratri 2016

The One Truth is sensed in ten different facets; the Divine Mother is approached as ten cosmic personalities. (S. Shankarnarayanan).

Navratri (Navaratri) starts tomorrow April 7 in US/April 8 in the UK and India, Asia, and Australia! It is the festival dedicated to the worship of the Divine Feminine Creative Power of the Universe known as Shakti and Maha Devi. She is said to come down and walk among us at this time, to help cleanse, bless, and heal the Earth and its inhabitants.

There are five Navaratri celebrations every year. The one in springtime is Vasant or Chaitra Navaratri. It is customary for devotees to worship Durga the first three nights; Lakshmi the second three nights; and Saraswati the last three nights. Others propitiate nine forms of the goddess Durga, and some worship the Das Mahavidya or the Ten Mahavidyas.

Worshiping these Mahavidyas bestows many gifts and removes certain obstacles on the path of life. The Mahavidyas are considered Tantric in nature, and represent the “Great or Transcendental Wisdom (Maha-Vidya), and are aspects of inner transformation. They are usually identified as:

1. Kali—The power behind time, the energy of spiritual transformation with destruction of ego

2. Tara—The Guiding Star who delivers us from darkness and samsara,  the wheel of birth and death,

3. Tripura Sundari (Shodashi and Sri Vidya)—The 16-year old maiden who represents divine perfection of Adi Shakti, the female embodiment of creativity and fertility.  She is also Lalitha, She who Plays, also known as Maha Maya, as She plays with us and through us in Her lila or divine play.

4. Bhuvaneshvari—The Goddess as World Mother, who is the reflection of Divine Wisdom, whose body is the whole cosmos.

5. Bhairavi—the Power of Death. She is Fierce.

6. Chhinnamasta—The self-decapitated form of Maa who holds Her own severed head,  signifying the ultimate power of self-sacrifice.

7. Dhumavati—The Widow Goddess, also Goddess of Death as well as Renunciation.

8. Bagalamukhi—She is also Pitambaradevi or Brahmastra Roopini and she represents the knowledge of Duality. She is in the still point between dualities and helps us to master them. She also helps us destroy lies and evil.

9. Matangi—She is the outcaste form of Saraswati (Chandalini), who dwells outside normal society. She is the power of dominion which can dispel evil.

10. Kamala—She is often identified as Lakshmi who bestows great fortune.

Vedic New Year 2016

One of the many New Year charts used in Vedic astrology is created at the New Moon in Pisces which will fall on April 7, 2016 throughout the world. Astrologer Steve Stuckey explains the reasoning behind New Moon in Pisces in a 2010 Jyotish Star article: “The question naturally arises, why the New Moon in Pisces? Unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be an answer forthcoming from Jyotish classical texts on this subject. However there is a reference in the Brahma Purana and the Chaturvarga Chintamani of Hemadri (approx 1300 CE), wherein it is stated that Lord Brahma created the universe on the Chaitra Shukla Pratipada or the first day of the first month of the year.” So simply, every year we celebrate the beginning of the New Year at the same astrological point when Lord Brahma created the universe!

Saturn Retrograde in Sidereal Scorpio

I’ve been hearing from many sensitive loved ones that life has been exceptionally “interesting” lately. Some of this might be because we are still in the three-day still point following the equinox, and are heading into a full Moon lunar eclipse on Wednesday, March 23. And oh, yeah, Saturn is also slowing to a rapid halt now for his retrograde station, when he will appear to start moving backward. Saturn retrogrades for about four-and-a half months every year. This time, he will be officially retrograde on March 25, 2016 at 10:01 AM UTC, and will remain retrograde until August 13, 2016.

The Astrology of Brexit Referendum

I have many clients in the UK who have been asking me to weigh in on Brexit, the campaign for the British exit from the European Union (EU). The referendum will take place on June 23, 2016. Will the UK remain in the EU, or will it vote to “leave”? A variety of horoscopes can be used to analyze this issue, and I have chosen a few of the standard mundane charts for the UK and EU, as well as a composite relationship chart for the UK-EU; the natal chart for PM David Cameron; the 2016 Vedic New Year chart for the UK; and transits and secondary progressions to a few of these charts, as well. All charts are cast using the sidereal zodiac, Lahiri Ayanamsa.
